This Old House - Roofing tips and tricks

certainteed installation manual

Basic Outline:

  1. Pry off old roof shingles with pitch fork.
  2. Nail down loose roof sheathing to rafters.
  3. Cover roof deck with 30-pound felt underlayment; staple felt every 6 to 8 inches.
  4. Nail drip-edge flashing to lower edge of roof.
  5. Snap vertical chalk line down center of roof.
  6. Trim tabs off roof shingles to create starter course.
  7. Center starter course on the roof's centerline; allow the shingles to overhang drip-edge by ½ inch, then nail them in place.
  8. Snap horizontal chalk line across roof so first course overhangs starter course by ½ inch.
  9. Set top edge of first-course shingles on the chalk line and nail them down.
  10. Snap horizontal layout lines every 5 inches all the way up the roof.
  11. Snap vertical layout lines every 6 inches across the roof.
  12. Continue laying roof shingles, aligning the top edges with the horizontal chalk lines, and the ends with the vertical chalk lines to create the proper 6-inch offset.
  13. Secure each shingle with four nails.
  14. Trim the shingles at the ridge and ends of roof.
  15. Cut 12x12-inch ridge-cap shingles from standard roof shingles.
  16. Center each ridge-cap shingle over the ridge and attach with two nails.

Subprojects

Support Sagging roof

Facing the house from the street, to the left of the chimney there is a significant sag. On further inspection a few of the rafters appear bowed and/or split. We will sister the rafters and raise them to eliminate the sag.

Rafter in the main section of the house meet the peak at a 32 degree angle and are approximately 151 3/16" - 151 1/8" . The rafters notch over the walls into the soffet.

Zinc Strips

This Old House - Removing Roof Moss

This seems like a great idea, especially for how our roof is situated under so many trees.

Steps:

  1. Slide a margin trowel under shingles to unstick them from the ones below.
  2. Slide sacrificial zinc strip underneath the loosened shingles.
  3. Secure the strip with roofing nails.
  4. Apply a dab of sealant to every nail head and run a bead of sealant under each shingle.
  5. Continue installing zinc strips across length of roof, end to end, leaving a 1/8 in. space between the strips.
  6. To kill existing moss and lichen, make a cleaning solution of equal parts bleach and water.
  7. Protect nearby shrubs and lawn with plastic tarps.
  8. Spray the cleaning solution onto the shingles using a garden sprayer.

Materials

  • asphalt sealent
  • Drip edge 222 ft
painted white aluminum or something, not bare galvanized anyway
they make these in different thicknesses so don't want thin stuff
as an example home depot has 0.0167 and 0.022 for aluminum
  • Ridge vent 63 ft

something besides the crappy mesh stuff

  • Ridge shingles 7 bundles

these are the shingles that go at the peak, the ones on top of the roof vent. we may need special of different shingles because we are using architectural. This is something you or i would have to look into.

Calculated based on:
based on 83 linear ft of roof ridge
assuming 5 inch reveal on each shingle, 200 shingles
assuming 30 shingles in a bundle, 7 bundles
  • Starter strip , 135 linear ft

in your outline above, we can't do 6&7 because these are architectural shingles, therefore we use a roll of 'starter strip' that simulates a first row of shingles. its generic and not a big deal but we still need it.

  • Ice & Water barrier 500 sq ft
using the specs for the grace product noted below:
it comes in 2 different sizes, 36 foot roll and 75 foot roll, get 5rolls or 3rolls depending what :they have in stock
5 rolls of 36' (540sq.ft)
or
3 rolls of 75' (675sq.ft)
  • Underlayer 16 square
Comes in 10sq roll, at 145/roll. Need two rolls.
  • Nails 1 box
because:
360nails/square
box/7200nails
  • Step flashing 244 pieces

assuming 4in x 4in x 8in galvanized

  • new led flashing around chimney
  • flashing for 2 pipes ( reuse bathroom vent )

The sad story

The roof before we touched it, mossy, moldy, rotten....

Tearing it off

The big party ripping off the old shingles. Each night followed by beer and grill around the camp fire.

Putting it back together

Look at those beautiful shingles!
